Digital Engagement for Marine and Coastal Sustainability
This call invites proposals that use the tools of new and emerging digital platforms to engage with problems of marine and coastal conservation, transition and/or sustainability, taking into account the challenges faced by local, as well as national, economic and environmental stakeholders.
Situated within Falmouth’s Design Thinking research theme, this project will involve critical research on sustainability and design. Critically, proposals should demonstrate the integration of disciplines proposed and the value of a transdisciplinary approach to marine or coastal sustainability.
The project will be hosted in the School of Entrepreneurship, and thus projects should be entrepreneurial in tenor, aiming to ultimately develop a new tool, method or approach that can be mobilised for impact beyond the academy.
Proposals should engage digital communications and marine science, with a weighting toward the former, where more specificity within digital communications can be proposed, and where other disciplines might be integrated as relevant (see below).
Topics that may be covered by proposed projects:
- Coastal sustainability
- Coastal communities
- Marine fisheries
- Science education
- Tourism industry
- Public engagement
- Science communications
- GLAM spaces (gallery, library, archive and museum)
- Social media analysis & user data
- Multiplatform storytelling
- Immersive tech
Ideally, this project will be carried out with a partner and there is the potential for partner relationships to be arranged with the support of the university following selection of the doctoral student. Possible partners might include, for example, the Eden Project, Plymouth Marine Lab, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, or the National Trust. In your application, please indicate how you envisage a partner supporting or contributing to the research, and how your project would benefit a partner.
