The following information is intended for applicants who have already been invited to an audition or interview, to help them prepare. Please note this is only valid for 2020-21.
We invite all applicants who show potential to an audition or interview. All interviews will take place online this year to ensure a safe experience. Interviews are two-way: they give you the opportunity to show your creative skills and ask any questions about the course; and they help us to assess further your potential to succeed in your chosen subject.
We'll invite you to an interview through the Falmouth Applicant Portal.
You can find details of your interview in the Applicant Portal.
You can find a list of alternative dates in the Applicant Portal if you're not able to make the one we've allocated to you. If you do need to reschedule we would advise you do this as soon as you can as dates fill up quickly.
Before allocating you an interview date, you will need to send us a link to your online portfolio
If you don't have a suitable portfolio then you can choose to answer one of our Falmouth Challenges instead in the form of a portfolio or a pitch. If you opt for pitch it should be a well rehearsed 10 minute pitch where you present your ideas in response to the challenge. This could be an idea for a product, service or business that tackles a global issue, using design thinking to empower and protect people and planet. You should use presentation slides (PDF, PowerPoint or handouts) to provide a visual context to your pitch.
Upload your portfolio or pitch online and send us a single link (the link needs to be accessible without a username or password or specific software) through the Applicant Portal
Once we have received it, we will then book a time and date for your interview.
Before your interview you'll need to prepare your portfolio or pitch. We also recommend you familiarise yourself with the information on the Sustainable Product Design BA(Hons) page and think about your responses to questions such as:
- Why have you chosen to study Sustainable Product Design at Falmouth?
- What aspect of Sustainable Product Design at Falmouth really interests you?
- Tell me how and when you use research to develop your design ideas?
- Can you show me a range of how you communicate your design ideas?
- Can you tell me about how you have made a prototype of a design?
- What are you currently involved in besides your current studies?
- What are your ambitions?
You'll be given the opportunity to use pieces from your portfolio or pitch to illustrate your answers.
A successful applicant will be able to evidence their skills, their enthusiasm and commitment to their subject according to the following criteria:
Criteria to be assessed
sketching; visualising ideas; graphical presentation; creative exploration and development; verbal presentation
Knowledge of 3D/product design practitioners or other artists/designers; sense of how this knowledge relates to own work; awareness of social and environmental issues
Design process; idea development; investigation of materials and production methods; technical skills; research and analytical skills
commitment and/or enthusiasm for this subject area; motivation; communication skills; creative thinking
Qualifications relevant to, and perceived aptitude for, the course of study
We aim to make all decisions within five working days of interviews. However, in some cases, we might wait until we have held a batch of interview sessions before we make a decision. All decisions will be made online in your UCAS Track account and we will also email you.
If, in order to attend an online interview, you have any individual requirements due to a long-term health condition, specific learning difficulty or disability, please contact the Accessibility Service as soon as possible.
